I think it means, for instance:
x1 is the bag of sea salt on my counter
x2 is pure sodium chloride
x3 is some number a little less than 1.
I don't usually think of sea salt as a chemical, though; I eat it, rather than
pure NaCl, because it has all those other elements. Getting the right mix in
the Lobgugde space station is going to be a bit tricky.
