[lojban] xukmi instance

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to the meaning of "instance" in the 
gismu definition of {xukmi}?:

'x1 is an instance of substance/chemical/drug x2 (individual or mass) with 
purity x3'

I've checked several dictionaries for "instance", but nothing fits.
