I agree with Lindar's interpretation.

Also, I thought I'd point out something interesting. IIRC, the "sex"
in "Middlesex" comes from "Saxon" (the group that settled in England).
"Middlesex" refers to where it is located. So "Sussex", "Essex", and
"Wessex" mean South/East/West Saxons. Also, I think that the "Eng" in
"England" comes from "Angle", the other group that settled in England.
Thus, we have the word "Anglo-Saxon".
