well... that's how I say them.  Other than the initial consonant, cut and nut sound the exact same to me.

He claims that "cut" and "nut" are pronounced with [ə] (unrounded
central vowel, a.k.a. schwa, a.k.a. {y}, i.e. he claims that "cut" and
"nut" are pronounced {kyt} and {nyt}, respectively).
