[lojban] Lettorals

I'm currently glossing a paragraph in Lojban (the third paragraph of
the Lojban translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland), and I am
stuck on a few words because they just don't seem to make any sense in
context.

The word 'abu' pops up quite a few times, as well at 'jy' and 'ry'.
Looking up these words tells me that they are just the names for the
letters 'a', 'j', and 'r', but that translation makes no sense at all
when used in the context. Do these words have other meanings?
