Yes. They (the eyelids, to be precise) do or don't allow access to the retina
by light from the outside.

 Yeah, I asked the same question many years ago and received the same response.  Interestingly enough, Hebrew uses two different words for generally opening (pytax) and opening eyes (pykax)
