What Ian said. I do agree that it's definitely used more often in practice. About the only time that I don't use it is when I"m either trying for a special effect, such as writing a song or poem, or trying to save on typing by removing a cu in a case like, i.e., "lo gerku mi viska" as opposed to "lo gerku cu viska mi".
