Sorry, I can't find תאו anyplace in Leviticus 11. Oh wait, found it, in
Deut. 14:5. It's always a problem trying to translate these sorts of
specific nouns from Biblical Hebrew. Without a continuous tradition, or
contemporary witness, it's very difficult to say what precisely most of
these words mean. Many of them are hapax legomena as well (as I think
this may be).
I have a Torah translation that's pretty thorough about collecting
sources for this kind of thing ("The Living Torah" by Rabbi Aryeh
Kaplan). He says:
"bison: Te'o in Hebrew, cf. Isaiah 4:5. That is, the "wild ox" (Targum
Yonathan, Sifri, Rashi, Ibn Janach, Radak, Sherashim). The Septuagint
translates it as oruga or orux, either the oryx, a large straight horned
antelope, or the aurochs, the "wild ox." Saadia also identifies it with
oryx, tethal in Arabic. Chizzkuni renders it as shulia."
Huh. Usually I can count on him for some Linnean binomials even, but I
guess the "wild ox" is just Bos taurus.
