Of course, France does not use the English word ‘stop‘, but the French word ‘stop’. http://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/stop

Then again, if you asked a quebecker whether "stop" is a french word, they'd tell you that it isn't.

That being said, there's moderate controversy surrounding "stop" vs. "arrêt" in Quebec, as the latter is just a noun whereas the former is typically interpreted as being an imperative.
