I just asked Joel about it. Joel is Brazilian and his wife is Costa Rican; 
they speak Portuguese to each other and to their children. When Ale was around 
1.5, she strongly wanted to learn English, because no one around her spoke 
Portuguese except her parents. She even made up English-sounding words that no 
one understood. But when they visited somewhere in Florida where there's a 
concentration of Brazilians and a Brazilian church, she was fine with 
Portuguese. So the reason K&F want to speak English is not that Lojban is 
harder to pronounce, but that no one else around them speaks it.
