What are the conventions for typesetting Lojban?

Is it true that using a monospaced font is the most conventional approach?

My experience is that monospaced Latin fonts  can never rival proportional fonts (just like fonts with serifs are potentially better than without them).

And since Lojban uses Latin alphabet as the only working solution I don't I would accept mono-spaced font as a convention or rule.

And what would be the logic of (dogmatically) sticking to a monospace font?
