I guess we would have to examine all the other evidentials, and see whether EVIDENTIAL+nai usually means "my evidence for this is of the kind opposite to EVIDENTIAL", or whether it means "I lack evidence of the kind EVIDENTIAL for this". There are only two other evidentials that have a -nai defined (ba'a and su'a) and both seem to go with the first approach. For the rest of them no definition is offered, probably because no obvious opposite kind was found.

Your scenario could actually be a good example for "ba'a cu'i" ("I am finding out about it right now").
