Re: [lojban] Digest for loj...@googlegroups.com - 2 updates in 1 topic

ba'e pe'i

Behind this lies a fundamental difference in understanding of what lujvo are and how they work. Lujvo are vocabulary. A competent speaker of Lojban is supposed to know them, not to decode them on the fly. Of course most vocabulary in any language is 'motivated', ie, related to other existing vocabulary in one (language-specific) way or the other. (You wouldn't want all new words to created out of thin air–such things do happen, but rarely.) And there are indeed parts of the language like, eg, '-gau' or '-bi'o', that in practice work pretty much like derivational suffixes, so, as often, things are not perfectly clear-cut.* But basically, we're supposed to know our lujvo the same way we're supposed to know our gismu.

(Nothing of this is new.)

* A thorough 'mainstream' linguistic analysis of Lojban would be a fun thing to read, but I'm under no illusions of such a thing happening any time soon.
