Some people do that, yes (that is, use {gy} specifically because what
they are quoting is in English).

It's not required, though -- "Lojban" doesn't care what you use.

Others like to use {zoi} as the delimiter, as in {zoi .zoi. This is
the delimiter .zoi.}. The important thing is really only that the
delimiter not appear in the text you are quoting.
