[lojban-beginners] {pau} without e.g. {ma} or {xu}

I just found myself, in English, ending a sentence that started with "I assume" with a question mark.

I was asking a question, but I had no question words in the sentence.

{xu mi sruma ko'a} would translate as "Do I assume {ko'a}?", which is not what I meant.

Is {pau mi sruma ko'a} grammatical (I expect so)?
Is it a horrible misuse of {pau} (I hope not)?
Would you understand it, and would it offend your lojbanic sensibilities?
