[lojban-beginners] Using "ko'a" when not specified by goi? Or maybe "da"?

coi rodo

If I was trying to make an example sentence like "He ate the apple" and I had nothing to refer back to (so I couldn't use ri/ra/ru) would it make more sense to say "ko'a citka lo plise" or "da citka lo plise".  I'd think the latter would be good because it means "X eats an apple". But I want to hear your input :)

I want to know because I'm never sure what to use when translating such sentences on Tatoeba.
