[lojban-beginners] Tenses

I'm reading "Lojban for Beginners" at the moment. I don't understand
why "pu", "ca" and "ba" take 2 sumti rather than the second being the
selbri that they're part of as with "ti'u". As it is they seem to be
selbri themselves, albeit with a strange form but I understand that
they're derived from selbri.
Any help would be appreciated.
