Where does L4B seem to say that?.

It adds an additional (unnumbered) place to the existing places of a
selbri. There are no x1 or x2 involved.

Yes.

It has to be:
mi klama le mi zdani ba lo nu mi tavla do
After "ba" you need a sumti. The way you had it the sumti after "ba"
is "mi", and then comes a separate selbri "tavla" that has nothing to
do because we already have a selbri ("klama") in our main bridi. With
"ba" we are adding an unnumbered argument place to "klama".

Right before the selbri and without a sumti is fine.
At the beginning of the bridi is also fine, but you need to follow it
with a sumti, so:
ba (lo (nu (mi tavla do vau) kei) ku) mi klama le mi zdani
(Only one of the terminators is actually required.)
You can also omit the sumti, but then you need to terminate it with
"ku", so it won't grab the next sumti:
(ba ku) mi klama le mi zdani
"Later, I go to my house."
