I'm not a native English speaker but I pronounce "writer" and "rider" differently, although the "i" in them I pronounce exactly the same. The difference in my pronunciation of the two words is in the wr/r. I don't actually pronounce the "w" in "writer", but when I say "writer" I start off with my lips curled into a "w", whereas when I say "rider" my lips are fully opened. The ending result is that the "r" sounds differently. Case in point: http://www.cinchcast.com/doccolinni/160269 (note though that my microphone is crappy so the recording is not exactly top notch). You can hear how the "r" in "writer" sounds "darker" than the "r" in "rider", which sounds more open and clearer.
