Or, giving up something that is not 'brain', but is otherwise cloce to
the normal cognition center ...

i.e. boost the efficiency of lungs, and you can reduce their volume.
Then you have a space, protected by the ribcage, that is close to the
brain/spinal cord. Perhaps the speed of communication from there to the
brain would be too slow for some real-time work, but it could be a good
backing store for things like vocabulary, and long-term memories. Make
it a 'full backup' of the brain, and you might even end up with the
ability to restore personality/memories after a severe head trauma -
after all, the only reason the brain is in the vulnerable head is to
speed up the data from the eyes and ears, which benefit from being as
high up as possible ...
