It looks like a mistake, there doesn't seem to be any reason to
drop the x2 of speni.

Well, you can always say {le speni be mi}, unless for some reason
it is important to indicate her sex. {fetspe} doesn't say that she is human,
or an adult, or whether she is tall or short, or what colour her eyes are,
or her nationality, or ... so if you are not bringing up all those facts in
the description, you may not need to bring up the fact that she is female
either. In English it is natural to use "wife" because that's a basic term,
but in Lojban the basic term is {speni} and in many situations it won't
be necessary to use the compound term where you would use "wife"
in English.
