Subject: [lojban] Re: names of the months
I actually like the Japanese and Korean system:
soldei Sun's day
lurdei Moon's day
fagdei day of the planet of fire (Mars)
jaurdei day of the planet of water (Mercury)
mudydei day of the planet of wood (Jupiter)
jimdei day of the planet of metal (Venus)
derdei day of the planet of earth (Saturn)
(Note that Saturday is associated with Saturn, the planet of earth,
not with planet Earth.)

I am not familiar with the associations between these planets and these
"elements". I am mostly certain that these planets are named after Roman
mythological figures which roughly correspond to ancient Greek mythological
figures. Based on this, it might be reasonable to name the days along these
lines:
jetydei Truth day (Helios, the Sun. Also can be associated with Apollo)
katydei Hunt day (Artemis, often associated with the Moon)
jamdei War day (Ares)
li'urdei Traveler day (Hermes)
lidydei Lightning day (Zeus)
pamdei Love day (Aphrodite)
spedei Marriage day (Hera)
There are other possibilities for this type of theme, since most of these
mythological figures are associated with more than one thing. I can
understand hesitance to calling a day of the week "War day" but I thought it
sounded better than "slaughter day". Some of these specific lujvo may be
better saved for other purposes. I can't think of any examples off the top
of my head that wouldn't be better off with one or two more rafsi, though.
I don't know whether either of these systems is better than the other; I'm
just offering another possibility that makes a little more sense to me
because it is based on things I already know about. I don't know which more
people are likely to know about. Although, once we decide on day names, the
association with whatever it came from may not even matter much. I am not
under the impression that most people don't think about where day names come
from on a daily basis. We could just as well arbitrarily choose things to
name them after, or choose some different length of week other than seven
days. But if we want the names to be based on similar things than the day
names we already know, here is another way we might decide to do this.
