[lojban] Re: my opinion on why lojban isn't specifically well suited for human-computer interaction.1
No, or at least I get a pretty consistent no from linguists when I use that
sort of definition. They site syntax as one of many pre-requisites for
being a language. In general linguists get really defensive if you try to
imply that any non-human animal could have a language. Cats definitely have
a set of patterns to represent their descriptions, but they're very self
centered and typically only describe themselves (though not always).
If it were up to me, you'd be right on the money with that definition of
language. Computer languages would be languages, animal languages would be
languages, human languages would be languages et cetera. However, there is
one compelling argument that my ASL teacher pointed out, pig-latin and Morse
Code are not languages, they are codes. They cannot stand alone to
communicate so while "go take out the trash" is being said in the English
language so is " --. --- / - .- -.- . / --- ..- - / - .... . / - .-. .-
... .... ". So that definition can't be completely right because it doesn't
include an independent nature.
