That's how by and large abstract nouns are conceived in Esperanto. Adjective "rapid-a" is "fast", and noun "rapid-o" is "speed (fast-ness)" rather than "something which is fast". But this scheme is inconsistent. For instance "German-a" is an adjective for "German", but "German-o" is a noun for "a German (person)" rather than "German-ness".
