Probably not, imho.  I don't think the highways should be lost entirely, more augmented.  I also like lorx's idea of houses being arranged in a fractal tree like that in http://df.magmawiki.com/images/9/97/Hactar1_Mandelbrot_Tree.png

I don't know if the mishmash of ideas would meld well practically though.  What do you think would work best?

Yes and yes I think would be best - every house can have its own solar panels and excess energy can be fed into a local grid w/storage for new building works or structures that it might not make sense to give panels to, or to provide additional power where necessary during night phases.
