That is, it is a stylistic convention, not a grammar change.  Nothing
wrong with that, of course, but not a change in the language per se,
merely in its use.

Which is just as important. What use is it that it's grammatical, if your interlocutor doesn't understand you? A change in semantics is still a change in the language, in my opinion.
