Yes.  It appears you wish to say that they expressed their pity.  So you can either use "lo sedu'u kecti" (they said that they were sorry), or simply "lei danlu cu kecti".  In fact, you can even say (a little trickier, but probably the closest to your intent) "lei [corrected from my previous erroneous le'i --g] danlu se cu'u kecti" (the animal expressed (something,) feeling pity)

Can one not say "cusku leka kecti"? It seems to match "express pity" quite well. Isn't there a difference between "feeling pity" and "expressing pity"? Maybe "jarco" can be used?

The problem is that lojban is/tends to be (to use a computer term) "strongly typed".  That is to say, only certain classes of sumti are meaningfully allowed in certain bridi slots (although others may be grammatically allowed).  So, in particular, things that you cusku are basically literal strings, text.  This is accomplished by a construct such as "cusku lo se du'u kecti" which literally means "said that thing which expressed (that they were feeling) pity")  I offered the other as an alternative.
