I agree. A period may look like a decimal point, but it's not the same.
Likewise an umlaut and a dieresis.
(I had a hard time figuring out how to say "what they look like". Is there a
better way to say it?)

example of needing dotside. How about calling it "losánxeles", as it's said in
Spanish?
Another example is "la .belarus." (which I call "la .blabruk."). "blabruk" is
valid with or without dotside because the "b" keeps the "la" from breaking off,
but "belarus" is valid only in dotside.
