Actually nowdays the Italians use "stare in silenzio" instead of
"tacere" because it's an irregular verb (I could have said "il ragazzo
tacque" but I fear that many would have had doubts on what the past of
"tacere" is).

So, in this case, "stare" is not in the sense of {stali}.
