I think the Russians do not always shorten. (Hope the Cyrillic comes out right.)

ьюша (Il'ya - Il'yusha)
Ивана - Иванка (Ivana - Ivanka)

And all this time I thought it was short for "Margarita", which is also not a diminutive.
