"merián" is two syllables. "merían" I think would be three, but I don't think 
anyone's written the rule precisely. "meriián" is three syllables, but 
it's "Mary Yan", not "Mary Ann". I'd go with "la Meri,án".

If a diphthong is stressed and the accent is written, the accent goes on the 
more prominent vowel. If we're going to formulate a rule for this 
orthography, we need to figure out how to syllabify an arbitrary string of 
vowels, some of which have accents.
