Re: [lojban] la .alis.

I was not thinking of (unambiguous) word-segmentation, only of phonetics. Words can run together in the ‘speech stream’, and two adjacent vowels can diphthongise, regardless of whether [lau,Iskiu,i] parses as {la uiski ui} or as gibberish.
