These are brivla used as "nicknames".

I thougth that {betsemes}, {xorxes}, etc. were cmevla, not cmene.  My understanding was that a cmene was everything that could be used as x1 of {cmene} (which includes quoted brivla).
That said, {la} was a gadri meaning "the one/someone called ...." and that was true regardless a cmevla or a brivla were used. After all many languages (if not all) have proper nouns that also have a meaning in itself (like "Fiore"->"Flower", "Bella"->"beautyful", "Remo"->"oar" for Italian).

Of course I might have been at fault for all this time.

This is why I would welcome the Merge. It would make rules about names simpler.
