I am confused about the phrase "ignoring the y-hyphen before the X" in the algorithm. If one drops this phrase from the algorithm, then in the trial word {katcicycatni} that arises in stage 5, the only joint is {tc}, which is a valid initial, so an {y} hyphen is inserted and the correct word without tosmabru failure is {katycicycatni}. The same applies to your other examples.

Can anyone comment on this phrase?
