I am confused about the phrase "ignoring the y-hyphen before the X" in the algorithm. If one drops this phrase from the algorithm, then in the trial word {katcicycatni} that arises in stage 5, the only joint is {tc}, which is a valid initial, so an {y} hyphen is inserted and the correct word without tosmabru failure is {katycicycatni}. The same applies to your other examples.

Can anyone comment on this phrase?

The phrase doesn't make much sense, because by the definition of "the X" there are never any y-hyphens before the X. The portion before the X is a string of CVC's that did not require any y to be inserted between them.

Interestingly, the phrase is not there in the online version: http://lojban.github.io/cll/4/11/
