{ga .i'amsi} requires the pause, if I'm not mistaken. It seems as easy to distinguish {gai'amsi} from {ga .i'amsi} as {dai} from {da .i}.

This is true, but even with no cluster there is nowhere for it to
break up (since y'ybu can't start or end a word and -ms- is not an
initial cluster). So, at least under camxes, it is a zi'evla.

Nevertheless, that consonant cluster is a requirement. In any case,
it can't be distinguished from "ga i'amsi" in writing, though
different in speech.

Some sequences are just junk, and that's all there is to them.
