[lojban] Re: Translation Help

Now that I think of it, I want to post about this here before I
forget. It's somewhat relevant. Uncle Robin posted a link to some kind
of article about how geek culture needs to change if we're ever going
to amass numbers and followings like stupider groups, and the article
resonated with me quite well (I think it should be plastered all over
lojban.org, it's a great article). There was one phrase in the article
that made me laugh because it was entirely impossible to translate
into Lojban. "Smart is not the opposite of stupid." or something to
that effect. {.i lo si'o mencre ku na dukti lo si'o tolmencre}. It's
funny, because we come up with some of the weirdest crap to say in
English. Literally, smart -is- the opposite of stupid in Lojban.
Mental-expert, un-mental-expert.

I was reminded of this suddenly when I was thinking about time-ish
things not being able to be measured in time-units.

Hmmm... maybe that's a better translation? .i le temcimni ku ka'enai
nikei lo temci
Yeah, I'd use that. "The time-eternal is incapable of being an amount
of (something) measured in time-duration."

...then again, maybe not? Not quite the same meaning.

So yeah, come back and clarify for us what you mean.
Also, maybe you could shed some light on the fad of putting Lojban
translations of English poetry/quotes/idioms into written works?
