I can see that you are getting digests from google groups. This means
it's better to reply via web interface:

State of the language...
I can certainly state that people drop out of lojban learning and
even following because the language isn't stable enough. The entire
local group quit.
Which local group are you talking about?
Karen Stein and John Hodges have been involved in the project almost
from the earliest years. John Hodges predates the split with TLI
Loglan, and he recruited Karen and several others in the Virginia Tech
(university) community near Blacksburg VA (about 6 hours drive from
here), in the early to mid 90s. John and Karen and occasionally others
from their group were present at nearly every LogFest held at my house
here in the Washington DC area until around 2002. Except for a few
people around here, they are the oldest "group" of Lojban students in
existence. There were other groups, in LA, SF, Boston and Yorkshire
England that formed shortly thereafter, but I don't know that any of
them still think of themselves as a "group" like the Blacksburg people
apparently do.
I am sure that John Clifford remembers Karen from LogFests, since they
were occasionally at odds %^)
The DC area group largely fell apart when Athelstan, one of its leaders,
suffered brain trauma in an auto accident in 1992 and never recovered
enough to resume leadership, though a few people showed up at LogFest
when we held them here - not so much as a "group" though.
The LA area group was centered on Jim Carter, who also invented guaspi.
I've heard from none of them since 1994 (and undoubtedly the failure
to continue publishing Ju'i Lobypli was even more important than the
delayed baseline in keeping these off-line communities together and
involved.
