Well, aye, there was a certain irony to my dissenting response; but I see the purpose of rational argument as being to seek a mutual understanding, either to reach a common set of conclusions, when all parties share the same axioms, or to achieve a clear understanding of one another's axioms when the parties' axioms differ. The focus of discussion is naturally on the differences of views, because it's in dealing with those differences that discussion is needed. But it's also true that when I discuss with my students, rather than my peers and colleagues, I do much more as you would recommend, since the goal is to foster the student's development, not to seek a mutual understanding. (On Lojban-list I've always felt myself to be among peers.)
I do acknowledge, though, that many newcomers might be discouraged in the way you say they are, so my disagreement is more with the essay you asked us to read than with your sensible advice about how newcomers should be treated.
