Both "tarta" and "torta" are used in Argentina. A "tarta" is more
flat, always stuffed with something, and need not be sweet (could be
of veggetables for example). A "torta" has to be sweet. A "birthday
cake" is a "torta de cumpleaños", not a "tarta de cumpleaños" in
Argentina. But there seems to be a lot of variation in different
places because "tarta de cumpleaños" gets almost as many ghits as
"torta de cumpleaños".
